RowBox launched in Hamilton - April 2009

The organisers of the 2010 Rowing World Champs are looking to surpass all previous events; at least with their promotional tool. They have launched the RowBox in the Hamilton CBD on Tuesday. It is a retractable 20-foot container with four rowing machines connected to a display of Lake Karapiro. CEO Tom Mayo says they are taking the container on a three month world tour. Mayo says no one has ever done anything like this in rowing before, and they've just handed out a magazine and said "come to our country". Tuesday's inaugural race saw Mahe Drysdale victorious, followed by Emma Twigg, Rowing New Zealand President Lesley Milne and Hamilton mayor Bob Simcock.

Are Hydraulic Rowing Machines any good? ?

I've been thinking of getting a new rowing machine and I know that air and magnetic rowers are the best. But does everyone have personal experience with hydraulic ones?

Apparently they don't allow you to row in the same sort of manner in which you should do?
So how DO you row with them

I was thinking of getting one like this. . .

http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores... />
Would it enable me to row properly? (like i would on an air-resistance rower etc.)
sorry about that

Try a Water Rowing Machine for the Best Workout Ever!

Anyone that swims knows that water can be a great form of resistance for those who want an aerobic exercise and resistance training at once.  Rowing machines are great pieces of workout equipment, and a water rowing machine can mean aerobic activity, resistance training, and overall toning in one.

Using a water rowing machine is a lot like rowing in real life.  The faster you go, the more resistance you'll get from the water.  This also means that you can go slower if your level of physical fitness calls for it.  Because you're seated at all times, there is no impact which is good news for those who have problems with their ankles, knees and hips.

Rowing machines imitate the action of rowing a boat.  Have you ever seen a sculling race that is very popular with the collages in England?  As you watch you will see the rowers sliding back and forth in there chairs as they row with the oars.  This back and forth movement with the lower body along with the rowing action of the upper body provides a total body workout.  This is has been long acknowledged as one of the best types of exercise available.

Some might question the benefit of a water rowing machine, thinking that they just can't get the same workout they do with a treadmill or elliptical machine.  Many people assume that in order to get a good workout you need to be standing up.  However, with a water rowing machine you are working virtually every muscle in your body at the same time.  You push off with your legs and use your entire upper body for the rowing action.

You are getting the aerobic workout when you go faster and are getting resistance training for all your muscle groups as well.  The back of your legs from your feet to your lower back is getting resistance training.  But with a water rowing machine you are also stretching your entire body as well.  Physical therapists use these machines quite frequently as the patient is working all their joints and tendons without putting addition stress on them.  Some who use a water rowing machine report feeling stretched and even relaxed after a workout.

Some may also hesitate to think of using a water rowing machine in their own home, worried about water getting on their floor or about the weight of such a piece of equipment.  In reality they are constructed in such a way that they're more watertight than most waterbeds and while they may be a little heavy when they're full, the water tank of most models of water rowing machines removes easily so you can empty it when you need to move the machine.  They're usually no heavier than a good humidifier.

Consider the great workout that you get with a water rowing machine it's no wonder that many are using this as the main aerobic equipment they have at home and many gyms are adding them to their areas as well.  If you're looking for a great piece of equipment for your own home that offers everything you could want when working out - aerobic training, resistance training, and overall stretching and toning - then why not give one a try?

How to Find a Discount Rowing Machine

Using a rowing machine is a great idea for any fitness enthusiast or anyone that wants to get back into shape.  With a rowing machine you are getting a great aerobic workout and you are also working every major muscle group in the body as well.  But with family budgets being stretched to the max these days, it's not a bad idea to search for a discount rowing machine if at all possible.  Where can you score such a bargain and what should you look for?

Most neighborhoods these days are finding resale shops springing up right and left.  This might be for clothes, household goods, and of course exercise equipment as well.  A quick local search of your neighborhood can turn up used sporting goods stores close to home.  Of course, if they're selling used goods they can't always guarantee what they have in stock so it might be a good idea to call first.  But if you do find that they have a rowing machine available, this means you can test it out right there in the store before you buy it.

Another good place to pick up a good piece of used exercise equipment is at your local garage sales.  Garage sales are not usually advertised in the newspaper so you need to keep track of any signs you spot during the week on lamp poles, walls, stop signs.  Keep a pad of paper and a pencil in your car as you are driving around during the week and jot down all of the address for garage sales along with the dates and times.

Do not be afraid of talking to other shoppers when visiting your local garage sale.  Perhaps they have seen what your are looking for or they may have the item themselves and have not yet put it up for sale.

When purchasing a discount rowing machine, you want to check it out thoroughly.  Make sure the cords are without wear and tear.  It should flow smoothly when it's used; any "catches" can signal a fray somewhere, which means the cord will probably need to be replaced soon.  Sometimes a rowing machine can have problems with the weights themselves; they can start to crack and show signs of wear after a few years of use.  Check them out for chips and dings.

While a discount rowing machine doesn't have a belt on it the way a treadmill does it definitely can still show signs of wear on every piece that moves.  Check it out carefully from all angles.  Be sure to check out all of the pivot points such as the where the oars are attached.  Also take a hard look at the track that the seat moves on and be sure that the sliding movement is free and easy and that there is no sidewise movement.

After getting your used exercise equipment home I recommend lubricating all pulleys, pivot points, and slide bars with white grease.  This grease is used for lubricating garage door tracks and can be found at home depot.

You can of course get a discount rowing machine from online sites such as eBay, CraigsList, and so on, but be careful.  It's difficult to make a good decision when you can't test it out first.  If you so shop online, try to purchase a brand new rowing machine from a closeout or discount store rather than get a used one from someplace else.  Many discount stores are just carrying models from a few years ago; they haven't been used but are no longer available at retail stores so that there's room for the newer models.  Very often these models are perfectly fine and offer everything you're looking for, so you can usually get a great deal on any discount rowing machine from stores like this.

Why You Should Not Purchase A Cheap Rowing Machine?

If you are looking to get in shape, prevent back pain, build strength and burn calories, you have probably considered purchasing a rowing machine. However, there is a lot that goes into purchasing a home rowing machine, as there are so many makes and models to choose from.

Of course, you have probably also eyed the cost of some of these rowing machines and the prices may have left you scratching your head. How can you afford such a device? Is there a cheap rowing machine out there somewhere?

Yes there is, however, many used rowing machines and fitness equipment you find online are not the best quality because they are often missing parts when they arrive at your door. For it to be sold as used it has to be disassembled, and then repacked and shipped.

Often times the seller will lose a vital screw, pin, pulley, or piece to the machine. (this has happened to me every time I have ordered used fitness equipment) Also, many online used auction sites do not provide any type of warranty or guarantee for your rowing machine, so you could end up with a dud and be out all of your hard earned money.

If you are serious about your health, which you should be, you will want to use your rowing machine consistently for years to come. Therefore, you need something reliable. If you plan on only using it for a couple months and then going back to eating pizza on the couch, don't even bother buying one as you are doing your wallet and your health a disservice.

What Are Online Auctions?

By their very nature, online auction sites, such as Ebay are designed as a way to offer low cost alternatives to full prices most online stores charge. This is the reason that online auction sites have exploded in massive popularity in recent years and also why they will continue to expand in popularity into the future.

However, there are a couple financial concerns you should be aware of. If you fall victim to these your used equipment won't be so "cheap" after all. For one, be wary of the shipping and handling costs.

Some sites have seriously inflated shipping costs on certain items. In this case there really is no deal to be had.

Also be wary of who you are really buying the product from. There have been countless scams on these sites. Never send a check or payment to anyone in the mail and be sure that any financial information you give is secure. Any legitimate website will provide a privacy policy. Read it, don't just look at it.

So, if you insist on buying used equipment stick with sellers that provide fair and reasonable shipping and don't try to steal extra profits through backdoor channels and be careful of who you are buying it from.

If you can afford it, it is definitely worth buying a new rowing machine or piece of home fitness equipment. Make the commitment to yourself to get healthy, stay in shape, and use it consistently.

Rowing machines can be excellent for improving your back and abdominal strength. Keeping your back in shape is vital to your overall health, as it can prevent a whole list of health problems.

So, if you are looking for a cheap, but good rowing machine than an online auction is probably not the best place for you to go. Take a look around the Internet and I bet you can find new rowing machines that can fit into your budget. They may not be as cheap as the ones on the auction sites, but they are much more reliable and financially safer to purchase.

Good luck on your journey towards health and wellness!

Rowing Machines: an All Over Body Workout on Dry Land

Why have rowing machines become so popular? First, they offer a complete workout; second, you can definitely lose those extra pounds; third, they can be adjusted to suit the level of fitness; and fourth, they are considered a low impact form of exercise.

More importantly, however, incorporating rowing machines into your exercise routine will afford you the opportunity to utilize the machine in the comfort of your own home. What type of rowing machine should you purchase? Depending upon your budget, there are some wonderful rowing machines available such as Bodycraft VR100, Concept 2, and Kettler Coach. All range in price from $699 to $999.

Another benefit in owning a rowing machine is that you can use it indoors or outdoors. But, more importantly, if you are currently on a diet and exercise program this will serve to enhance your exercise routine no matter what age you are.

At a time when obesity has become a pandemic in our society, efforts are underway to educate consumers to the dangers of sedentary lifestyles. Currently, fast food restaurants in the US will have to list the calorie content of their meals as well. While this is a first step, most doctors and experts will tell you that exercise is the most important factor in eliminating weight, strengthening muscles, and provide for a healthier lifestyle.

Rowing machines can offer you an alternative to spending hours at the gym, at a substantial cost by the way while, at the same time, providing a workout that encompasses your entire body and not just one area of concern.

In addition, most rowing machines today will accommodate your height and weight, can be easily stored, and doesn’t take up that much room in your home. With summer approaching, you can take the rowing machine outdoors and workout every other day, if you so choose.

If you are just beginning an exercise regimen, a rowing machine is the best way to ease into a fitness program because they are designed to coincide with your fitness level. It is worth the investment as well.

Check the internet and peruse the many websites that offer rowing machine. Compare and contrast them by price and fitness level; then go to your local sports outlet or one of the major wholesale clubs and price them. Try it out and determine which one is best for you.

We live in stressful times, and one way to relieve that stress is to exercise using rowing machines.

Rowing Machines: Great for Exercising Your Whole Body

Rowing machines offer a great way to strengthen your back, legs, thighs, and buttocks, but you must be careful to use the correct rowing technique to avoid injury.  Your back particularly is susceptible to injury if the correct form is not used.  It is the same form that is used on a boat in the water.

The first thing you need to do before using a rowing machine is to talk to your doctor and get an "all clear" before starting any exercise program.  Then you will need to slowly stretch your legs, back, and arms to warm them up and allow you to complete the whole range of motion without causing any injury.  As you are beginning, make sure to concentrate on performing the whole motion smoothly without jerking and carefully move with calculated awareness (make sure you are aware of your body's position).  You will also want to carefully consider the resistance that you have the machine set at.  If you set the resistance too high, you will not receive the benefits of the cardiovascular workout.  If you set the resistance too low, you will not receive the benefits of the strength training and muscle toning.

To begin the rowing motion, you will want to sit on the machine's seat in the most forward position gripping the oars firmly, but relaxed.  Then using your legs, push the seat back until your legs are nearly straight and using your arms pull back on the oars.  Once you have reached the apex of the stroke, allow your body and oars to return to the beginning position.   You will need to allow two to three minutes of warm up strokes before you begin any power strokes.  Once you have warmed up, you are ready to begin a rowing machine workout.  You should plan on 30 – 40 minutes of power rowing to account for a cardio workout.  After you have completed the 30 -40 minutes, you will need to spend several minutes rowing slowly in order to cool down.

One of the best types of rowing machines you should consider if you decide to purchase a machine is an air resistance rowing machine.  These types of rowers use air to provide the resistance.  One of the best things about the air resistant machine is that it is very smooth and the stronger the stroke being used, the more air resistance you will encounter.  This makes the workout change based directly on the amount of power you put behind your strokes.  Also because the mechanisms are so smooth, the likelihood of injury is reduced.

The workout provided by a rowing machine is great because it covers both cardiovascular and strength training.  This will not only allow you to lose weight, but you will tone and strengthen your muscles leading to a better, fit you all over.  Just make sure that you stretch, see your doctor, follow the workout appropriately, and cool down to avoid unnecessary injury.  Enjoy your rowing machine.

How To Use A Rowing Machine Effectively

Before using a rowing machine or any piece of physical fitness equipment for the first time, it is important to learn about how the machine functions and how to effectively use it. The machine itself will do nothing for you unless you use it properly and safely, and of course, actually use it.

What Is A Rowing Machine?

A rowing machine is a type of exercise equipment that works by simulating the action of a rowing scull for the purpose of exercise or training for rowing. This machine is most helpful in strengthening your back to help prevent back ailments later in life. This type of machine has actually been around for over a century now, but only reached the peak of popularity in recent years, thanks to technology.

Is Resistance Effective On A Rowing Machine?

There are four different types of resistance that are available on rowing machines:

* Piston resistance

* Magnetic resistance

* Air resistance

* Water resistance

None of these types of resistance are really any better than the others. You should choose whatever you feel most comfortable using for your fitness level. The piston resistance is the most popular option, because it allows the machine itself to be so small and compact, and thus makes it easier to fold up and transport around.

The magnetic and air resistance models are also quite popular however, because they allow you more control over your workout and offer a smoother motion. These are great for the serious fitness buff and rowers who are looking to train out of the water. This type of resistance makes them almost silent, even during an intense workout, which is great because then you never have to worry about bothering other people with noise while effectively using your rowing machine.

Another way to make the most effective use of your rowing machine is to know which extra features to include with it. For instance, digital display of rowing functions such as speed, time, distance, and calories burned, these are all features that you can have added onto your rowing machine for an additional price. Just make sure that you are actually going to use a rowing machine consistently before paying for one, or it may not end up being so effective in the end.

Out of all the different types of exercise equipment available today, the rowing machine is absolutely one of the very best. Why? Because it can help strengthen your back and abdominals.

Your back should be strong and your stomach should be free of excess fat if you want to avoid a whole list of medical problems later in life. Obesity is another long-term health concern and using a rowing machine effectively 3 to 5 days a week will keep you fit and slim, as long as you also follow a healthy diet. Also because row machines are low impact exercise they won't jar your knees and hips, like running.

Exercise Rowing Machines: How To Row Away The Pounds

If you aren't already in good shape you need to get there. And don't try to get in shape and lose pounds from taking pills or powder, you need to take on an actual dedication to your health by getting active and working out. Exercising three days a week for twenty minutes each session, along with a healthy diet of course, will give you the body you have always wanted (or use to have).

Don't Use Your Age As An Excuse

If you are unsure if you are healthy enough to exercise consult your doctor before you work out on any fitness machine. Otherwise, no matter what your age or current fitness level there are exercises and machines that are right for you. One of the best exercise machines for anyone to use is a rowing machine.

There are a number of reasons why people choose to purchase or utilize exercise rowing machines. For some, this is a novel way of increasing strength and endurance. For others, using exercise rowing machines can shake up previous exercise programs by providing a new way of getting some cardio and conditioning in.

For a small few, a rowing machine can be used to burn excess calories. Yes, the words used here are "a small few" as most people opt to use more traditional cardio exercise equipment items as a means of burning up excess calories.

Despite being an excellent tool for burning calories, the rowing machine is not as popular as Nordic tracks, treadmills, or the stationary bike. This is unfortunate as exercise rowing machines can burn calories quite effectively while at the same time increasing lean muscle mass.

How To Use Exercise Rowing Machines

The common design of exercise rowing machines allows for the person using the device to adjust the level of resistance. It can be tweaked to be made very difficult to move or it can be adjusted to have little weight.

If you want to use exercise rowing machines to burn calories then the resistance level on the rowing device needs to be adjusted so that you are using little or no resistance and/or weight. This concept is common among all forms of resistance training: low weight and high reps equal definition.

Now, please do not fall for the fallacy of logic that low weight/high reps means muscle tone. This is simply not true. What really occurs is more calories are burned and that reduces stored fat and allows the muscles to "show."

There is no such thing as toning a muscle as muscles can only do one of two things: get bigger or get smaller. Far too often, people only consider the addition of extra weight as the primary goal of getting better with a rowing machine. This is a limited outlook.

While increasing weight will aid in building muscle and strength, lessening the weight also has a number of positive benefits as well. For example, when you have little weight or resistance, you can do more reps and do them faster. This will burn calories as the purpose of using the device shifts from strength training to a cardio workout designed to burn calories.

Now that you now how to benefit from and how to use a rowing machine you should consider trying one. It can be a particularly good exercise for those who are looking for a good low impact exercise oppose to running, which can be jarring on the knees and back. Just make sure that you are dedicated and committed to actually using it. The machine won't do anything for you unless you are on it.

Why Opt for a Kettler Rowing Machine?

There are some places and some companies known for their high standards when it comes to manufacturing, and the Kettler rowing machine is one such piece of equipment; built by Germans to rigid and exacting standards, the Kettler is one of the best machines you can find for both an aerobic and total body workout.

Many fitness experts believe that rowing is the ultimate workout.  It is one of the few exercises that works all three muscle groups and also stimulates the cardiovascular system at the same time.  Using a rowing machine a half an hour a day, three times a week is one of the fastest way to get into shape because the workout works your entire body at the same time.

A Kettler rowing machine is one of the best machines you can find for limited space.  Its frame is stable and smooth and better than most of even your more expensive models.  The entire group of upper body muscles is worked with a rowing machine, one of the best workouts you'll ever get with a compact machine of its size.

The Kettler rowing machine has an outrigger design that replicates a natural elliptical movement of a real rowing motion.  You are working more than just your arms but your entire upper body with the smooth rowing motions.  This means that you're not just building muscle but you're getting them to stretch as well.  By using a rowing machine this way you're building muscle while working your joints and tendons as well.

Choosing a rowing machine is always a good idea for anyone despite their level of physical fitness.  If you're just starting out or are seriously overweight, keep in mind that sitting down while using the machine means you're not putting weight on your knees and joints.  For true fitness enthusiasts that are more in shape, you can step up your routine with a Kettler rowing machine and add more resistance and a faster motion.  This means you can increase your intensity to burn more calories and pull more weight, if you so choose.

Some additional features of the Kettler Kadett Rowing Machine consist of two hydraulic cylinders that control the resistance level of your work out.  You can change the resistance of the machine with a simple twist of a dial from 1 to 12.  The foot plates can be adjusted to different lengths for each leg.  A heart monitor is included as part of the training computer that also tracks the speed, time, strokes, and distanced traveled of your workout.

If you're shopping for a rowing machine, you have a wide variety of options available to you.  Their least expensive models are compact and easily stored under a bed or in a closet, whereas their larger and more expensive models have a larger ranger of resistance and other options.  But whatever model of Kettler rowing machine you choose, remember that you are not sacrificing form or function with any of them.  They are all built to be powerful machines perfect for getting anyone back into shape and to last a lifetime regardless of use.  Most are very budget friendly, so if you're looking for something that's affordable they're sure to have an option for you as well.  If you're already in great shape and looking to add variety to your workout or are just getting started with your routine, you can't go wrong with one of these choices.

A Review of: The Bodycraft Rowing Machine

When it comes to home rowing machines, many people believe that the individual machine itself is what will make their back and body healthy and slim. Many advertisements make it seem that each type of machine is the best and will do the work for you.

Getting in shape really comes down to your core desire and effort towards changing or improving upon yourself. On top of that your diet also plays a major role in your overall health, and there is virtually nothing a rowing machine can do for you if you eat processed food all day long.

With that said, the rowing machine can be one of the most effective overall workouts. The rowing machine is a great all around exercise routine and helps to work out almost all areas of the body, especially your back, waist and abdominals. It is an excellent, safe way to get and stay fit, and is also very affordable, compared most other home gym equipment.

How Do I Know What A Good Rowing Machine Is?

I have used several different rowing machines, and home gym equipment by names such as Weider, Bowflex, and The Total Gym. Some of these can be great for total body workouts, but they are generally very expensive and often times you are paying more for a name and who endorses rather than the equipment itself.

Why I Use A Bodycraft Rowing Machine

Before I buy any home gym equipment I do a lot of research and go to local gyms to try several different types of fitness machines. I don't like to spend tons of money because, as stated above, I know that most of the results of using a rowing machine come from me and how consistently and effectively I use it.

After diligent research, my favorite home rowing equipment is the Bodycraft rowing machine. It sparked my interest as I found that other natural health and fitness experts had given it a high recommendation.

Features Found On Bodycraft Rowing Machines

There are actually a few different Bodycraft rowing machine models available, and the Bodycraft VR100 is especially popular, and is my favorite of their line of rowing machines. It is an incredibly compact, yet durable exercise machine that anyone can afford to add to a home fitness equipment collection.

The operating motion of the machine is smooth and quiet, which is convenient because others around you do not have to be bothered by noise while you are working out. Also, it offers six different levels of resistance, which allow users of all fitness levels to be able to benefit. Make sure that you use an amount of resistance that is appropriate for you and your current level of fitness. Also, when you use a rowing machine you should do so in a very smooth controlled motion.

Another helpful feature I found on this Bodycraft Rowing Machine is that it also displays important information to the user during a workout, such as:

* Time

* Distance traveled

* The number of strokes

* The number of calories burned

* Your heart rate

Not only can this information be valuable to understand more about what muscles and areas of the body are being worked out and toned, but it also helps for people who are trying to lose weight. People who are trying to lose weight can keep better track of how many calories they are consuming and burning.

There are other Bodycraft rowing machine models available as well, but regardless of which particular model you are interested in, the most important thing of all is that you buy some type of rowing machine or home gym equipment and use it regularly and properly. This is the only way you will benefit from home equipment and get yourself fit, strong, and healthy.

Take a look at several different websites and types of rowing machines out there. If there is another name, besides Bodycraft that you like and trust, by all means stick with it! You always want to stick by names that you like and trust, especially when it comes to purchasing fitness equipment.

If you have never tried a rowing machine, go to your local gym and give any rowing machine a try 3-4 days a week for a month. I bet you will notice a big difference in your weight, waist line, back and abdominal strength, as well as your overall health. Oh yeah, don't forget to eat a healthy diet full of high quality protein and lots of organic fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

Good luck on your journey towards health and wellness!

Free Information On The Everglide Rowing Machine

A rowing machine has many benefits over other exercise equipment, and namely it is ideal for strengthening your back, which can prevent many debilitating medical conditions late in life. On top of that rowing machines help you shed away extra fat and are easy on your joints.

When it comes to finding a rowing machine, you may find yourself overwhelmed at the multitude of options that are available to you. Of course, as with anything else, there are a few in particular that stand out from among the rest:

* Bodycraft

* Everglide

* Weider

The Best Features And Durability

All three of these are recognized as the world's best rowing machines. This is largely due to the great versatility that these machines offer, many rowing machines only offer one standard rowing exercise.

Don't get me wrong standard rowing machines aren't bad as most of what you get out of an exercise machine comes from you and how effectively and how often you use it. If you don't plan on using it a lot a standard machine may be worth it for you because you will save a little money. On the other hand if you are serious and committed to your health and fitness a rowing machine like the Everglide machine will do you much justice.

The Everglide rowing machine along with the Bodycraft and Weider models are made of extremely high quality materials and are built to last. No matter how often or hard you use your rowing machine you will not have to worry about it breaking or wearing down.

This means that you can rest assured and feel more comfortable and at ease while performing your workouts. And you can perform your workouts on them for years to come.

A good rowing machine, like the Everglide model is based on air resistance technology, which means that the resistance comes from your own pace and continues to increase as your pace increases. This is beneficial because it allows you to have more control than you would with other forms of resistance on the same type of machine.

The only downfall to the air resistance models is that they are generally much noisier than their counterparts. Companies like Bodycraft offer several models of rowing machines so if you like one company's quality, but don't like the noise of their air resistance model than simply look for another model under the same name.

The Everglide rowing machine and similar models do not require much upkeep either because these machines do not have any brake pads to wear out or friction mechanism needed to generate heat.

A good rowing machine, such as the models listed above will come with monitors to keep track of things like:

* Distance traveled

* Hear rate

* Intensity

* Calories burned etc.

This technology is exceptional to have at your fingertips during a workout. Whether you are a world class rower training for the Olympics or just someone wanting to lose some extra pounds it allows you to keep track of what you are working on.

How And Where To Find The Right Rowing Machine

If you are interested in purchasing a Everglide, Bodycraft, or Weider rowing machine for yourself you should consider going to your local gym to try them out for yourself so you can get a feel for what the different machines offer. This is very important as we all have different body types and fitness goals.

A machine that is perfect for one person may be not right for you, so get in there and try them. Once you find one that you like you should easily be able to find the rowing machine online for a better price than you will find at a local fitness store. You can sometimes even find them used online, just be careful though as sometimes used fitness equipment is missing small pieces.
